Top 5 Musicians Styles We're Stealing
- Published:15th Jul 2016
Rock stars influence our style more than ever these days, especially when they look back at past eras and make us drool over their vintage style fashion. Here are our top five favourite fashionable ladies in music and our Alice's Pig take on how to get their famous looks, including the ever popular Lana Del Rey, Florence Welch, Paloma Faith and recent American favourites Melanie Martinez and Halsey.
Lana Del Rey
Inspired by 50's and 60's Americana and Hollywood glamour many of Del Rey's songs feature references to Marilyn Monroe, Elvis and Springsteen and has prompted her to likened herself to that of a "lounge singer" and a "gangster Nancy Sinatra" in the past. This certainly comes across in Del Rey's fashion which consists of largely vintage inspired silhouettes that pinch in at her waist, large sun hats and glasses, long skirts and Jackie O' jumpers and shirts.
A great style steal for Honeymoon inspired glamour would be Alice's Pig's Jackie's Jack silk shirt in off white, tucked in and the loosen slightly with Sina's Seoul in black. The dark pattern and print with flashes of dusty rose are reminiscent of Lana's love of roses and Bel Air from the Born to Die/Paradise era, whilst the overall style of the garment screams Honeymoon. Pair with a large striped sun hat and platforms for West Coast 50's California cool. Et voila: Ready is your very own statement piece.
Sighting Billie Holiday and Etta James as musical role models, Paloma Faith is influenced by 1920's/1930's jazz and soul which comes across both in her music and over all look. Compared musically to Amy Winehouse and Duffy, Faith's music is quite melancholic though beautiful due to dark yet romantic subject matter. Her style is "retro" and "eccentric" blending old and new to create innovative sound and fashion.
A Perfect Contradiction, her personal style is reflective of the 30's to 50's with midi dresses, fur, print, glitter and pin in hats and flowers. A good style steal is our Selma's Sparkle dress featuring a classic 30's/50's straight silhouette, pulled in at the hips, whilst it's art deco repeat pattern is a little bit more Gatsby than Mad Men. Pair with Feline's Fur jacket to add that classic Paloma Faith fun and glamour. Add a pair of Mary Jane's, curls and trademark red lips and you're the whole Fall to Grace package.
After joining the Voice USA singing an alternative version of Britney Spears' Toxic, Melanie Martinez has been on a steady rise to fame. Her musical style is like her fashion: dark, mixed up, crazy and fun. Martinez grew up listening to her father's Beetles records and is often compared musically to Marina and the Diamonds and Halsey who have a similar electronic/alternative musical style with inspiration from the 60's onwards to now.
Her vintage style fashion heavily reflects the her first album titled the "Crybaby era", Melanie sporting baby doll dresses, tutus and high necked shift dresses in a 60's style. She is heavily influenced by Japanese culture and her fashion is often in a range of floral prints and candy shades. For a style steal Zooey's Zipper in blue is a great piece for a Play Date. A mini-dress style, it fits with Melanie's look for the album and features a statement front zipper and contrasting candy shades in a Japanese floral print. Pair with bunches, bows, a teddy, frilly socks and platforms for ultimate Pity Party perfection.
Florence Welch, known as the front woman for Florence + The Machine is known for making heads turn due to a blend of unique craziness and 70's quirk. The band's musical style is a mix of "dark, robust and romantic" with a blend of "classic soul and midnight-on-the-moors English art rock", their songs containing dark subject matter though the band's dark alternative style and dreamy instrumentals stop their music from entering metal and heavy rock terriority.
Florence's style is just as strange as her music however, describing her stage presence as Lady of Shalott meets Ophelia...mixed with scary gothic bat lady". She sites Stevie Nicks as an influence both in fashion and in stage presence, often opting to wear long floaty/billowing gowns that mirror that of Nicks. For Lungs lovers we would recomend Winowna's Wonderland to Kiss With a Fist, sheer fabric and darker brown, reddish tones reminding us of the famous front cover from the first album, whilst gold shimmering detail nods to the follow up Spectrum. Pair with sandals and flowing locks for festival alternative Rabbit Heart chic.
Halsey alsmost seemed to gain fame over night for those who know of her, pulling a Lorde and hitting it big on social media with a flawless EP and a follow up album that has been hit reply more times on tumblr than any before. Growing up her father listened to rap music including 2pac, whilst her mother favoured Alanis Morsette and Nirvana, all of which influenced both her music and her fashion. Halsey's style is described as "electropop" whilst it's called "alternative" by others, Halsey herself descrbing Badlands as an "angry female record".
Her fashion sense is certainly refelective of her music style and is in fact a "mash up" of 90's cool, favouring baggy t-shirts, crop-tops, shorts, fur and bright colours. Our classic crop tee featuring the Alice's Pig logo is certainly a New Americana favourite and fits Halsey's style espeically when paired with Winnie's Western in turquoise, perfect for the Drive around the Badlands. Pair with Kim's Wilderness grunge blazer, converse and a pink fur back pack to complete the look. Oh and some hair chalk of course.
